Nordic Walking
At its most basic, Nordic walking is low impact fitness walking using specially designed, lightweight poles. The poles relieve the lower body of much of the stress therefore making it gentler on ankles, hips and knees. Nordic walking also burns significantly more calories than walking the same distance at the same speed without poles because the muscles of the upper body are actively involved during the activity.
Jacqui and Nici have found that Nordic walking complements Pilates very well. It adds cardio-vascular conditioning to create a balanced exercise programme. With its postural focus Nordic walking works the limbs in extension (behind the line of the body).
We spend most of our time in forward bending movement patterns. Nordic walking maintains an upright carriage of the chest strengthening the muscles of the upper spine, reversing the forward position of shoulders and upper back. It’s a beautiful fit with Joseph Pilates method of stretching the tight and strengthening the weak muscles to balance the body. What a beautiful fit!!!
